Unplanned Finds: Crafting My Dream Winter Coat

This coat has been on my sewing wish list for a few Winters but I never had the elements for this classic black Winter coat.

As it turned out, I found the black corduroy fabric, the lining, the buttons and the buckle all at @achievesewingbasket , in a series of unplanned visits.

This is now my classic black coat for Winter.

Long version:
This coat was an idea that never came together during our short Winters.

This coat started to come together after I sewed Burda Style 5799 for an embroidered linen fabric from @longancraft earlier this year.
Then I took Burda Style 5799 for another spin in a @minervadotcom tweed coating. That was my fast and not furious fushia/berry jacket.

The Burda Style design is for a jacket and not a coat. The coat decision came once I found this black corduroy. The fabric length was limited which meant I needed to cut out all the external facing fabrics in the cord and possibly use a different fabric or fabrics for the undersides.

There was no turning back now.

I had a black woven fabric in my stash that I used for the undersides of the pocket and collar.

On one of my unplanned visits, I spied at the top of the shelves (that’s a big things for a shortie like me, a roll of dark grey lining at The Sewing Basket. A perfect lining for this coat and project.

Later I needed black buttons and some type of hardware for the back belt feature and these were at The Sewing Basket on another unplanned visit. These notions are nothing flash and they work well for this project.

When I went to pay for my notions, the lady at the counter did say ‘didn’t you come in here last week too?’
Yes I did.

Here’s something to avoid for new sewists. When you’re hemming a black coat, don’t wear black trousers to check the coat length.

That’s all I’m saying.

This is now my classic black coat for Winter.
