How to Sew a Comfortable Boat Neck Top

I do like having bright knit tops to bring some colour to the cooler days ahead. You can’t be sad wearing this pink jersey top with a pair of jeans and a warm jacket right?

The colour range available of this fabric is a lot!

This knit is 96% viscose and 4% elastane. That means this knit should hold its own after a number of wears and washing/drying. The fabric is 147cm wide so it’s very easy to use is so many styles.

In my case I decided to sew Sew Over It Edie knit top. This pattern is in their Work to Weekend My Capsule Wardrobe. I bought this range of Sew Over It patterns ages ago. This range was published in 2018 so it has taken me years to try one of this pattern bundle.

I did a toile and made a few adjustments.

On the sleeve toile I added a cuff, so I added the same cuff to this version. I have plans to use this pattern for some merino jersey knit and having a sleeve cuff on merino jersey works well.

The other issue regarding this pattern was the neckline. I went down a size and did an adjustment to take some of the width out of the boat neckline.

I only have 14cm at neck to shoulders so I needed a bit more coverage to make this top or comfortable.

I used double sided iron on tape for the neckline to keep it stable while I sewed it.

Minor change really. These are all adjustments anyone can do.

I gave the fabric a good machine wash and tumble dry. That’s how I’ll be caring for this top once it’s sewn.

The fabric came out really well. The pink was colour fast – a really good thing.

This is the second Edie top I’ve sewn. Really easy to cut and sew in 1 afternoon.

The jacket is Burda 5799
