Liesl describes the Tomigaya as ‘Refined, yet elegant and casual, this classic shirt dress can go anywhere and can be worn in multiple ways. The elastic waist looks smocked and can be cinched with the drawstring that ties in front. The bodice features buttons halfway up the front and a classic collar with collar band. Choose from long sleeves with a tower placket and button cuffs (View A) or short sleeves with ruffle detail (View B). The below-the-knee skirt can be lengthened or shortened to suit your preferences. This style can be worn year-round and layered in cooler weather.’
Size sewn: The version I sewed was View B in size 14 at the waist and size 12 at the bust. I chose the C cup version because the sizing suits me best.
My adjustments
On the shoulders, I did a forward shoulder adjustment of 2 cm – front bodice, back yoke, sleeve head.
I also lowered the top of the centre front bodice by 1cm. I checked the collar stand to work on this change.
On the skirt, the skirt length was adjusted to 50cm.

Once I finished the dress, the bodice seemed too bulky. I fiddled with where the bulk was to figure out what would work for my shape.
On the bodice I removed 3cm in length just above the waist and it’s sitting much better on me now. I looked a bit too pudgy (fat and short) if I left the bodice that long.
This dress took some time to sew. I love the process and Liesl’s instructions.
I am happy with this style. I’ve worn this style before and it’s so easy to wear.
I want to make another one with a viscose/rayon print once we have cooler weather again.
